Florida Credit Union service named in virus laden email

Florida Credit Union utilizes multiple layers of defense in protecting member information.  One of these methods is monitoring email boxes for indication of new attack methods, phishing, or anything else.

Today, we received the following email:

From: english7@russony.com
To: XXXXX@e-alert.flcu.org
Subject: e-alert.flcu.org account notification

Dear Customer,

This e-mail was send by e-alert.flcu.org to notify you that we have temporanly prevented access to your account.

We have reasons to beleive that your account may have been accessed by someone else. Please run attached file and Follow instructions

(C) e-alert.flcu.org

Attached to the email was a file called settings.zip.  This file contains a virus that is currently being picked up by a handful of antivirus solutions.

Though the reference to the email alert system used by Florida Credit Union,  FCU did not send out these emails, nor has any affiliation with those that did.  Note the typographical errors in the email.  The email we received came from an email server in Romania.

Always be careful with attachments in email.  Many pieces of malware are still sent via email, and rarely what they seem to be.

4/28/10 Security Update

The following email is being sent to FCU Visa Credit Card holders on behalf of Florida Credit Union. This is a legitimate email being sent to inform members of the recent governmental changes to the way credit card statements will be distributed due to the Credit CARD act. This does not affect the terms of your credit card account in any way. If you have any further questions, please call FCU at (352) 377-4141.

Phone Phishing Scam – 4/18/2010

Members and non-members have been receiving calls claiming to be from Florida Credit Union that there is a problem with one of their cards with us (debit, credit, or ATM).  The automated call asks the member to press 1 to reactivate their card, and then gathers information about card number, PIN, etc.

When dealing with card fraud, Florida Credit Union would talk directly to its members about their situation.  In cases of fraud, numbers that we will likely call you from are:

  1.  Your local branch
  2. Our Falcon Card Services- 888-918-7313, 727-299-2449, or 800-889-5280
  3. Our 800 number (800-284-1144)

If you get any suspicious calls, do not hesitate to either call us, or email spoof@flcu.org.  We will be happy to verify the validity of any such contact.

No worries. Your money is safe with us.
The sight of worried bank customers lining up to withdraw their money is enough to make anyone start biting their fingernails! But you can relax. Your money is safe and sound here at Florida Credit Union.

Why are all these banks going out of business?
Over the past few years, many banks and mortgage companies wrote loans for people with low credit scores and little or no cash reserves. As interest rates went higher, many of these loans went into default. The credit crisis is now catching up to these lenders.

Is there a chance that Florida Credit Union will close?
No. Absolutely not. We are in a strong financial position. We do not write risky loans or sub-prime mortgages, so we have avoided many of the problems that have plagued the industry.

Is my money insured at Florida Credit Union?
Yes. We provide deposit insurance through the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a well-respected federal agency. If you have less than $100,000 in regular accounts or $250,000 in IRAs with us, your funds are 100% insured. You can enjoy expanded coverage by structuring your accounts in certain ways. Ask us for details.

How do I know this insurance coverage is reliable?
The NCUA issued a mid-year report affirming the strength of the insurance protection and the health of the credit union industry as a whole. In the history of the NCUA, not one credit union member has ever lost a penny of insured assets.

How can I learn more?
Visit www.ncua.gov for information on your insurance coverage, or simply contact the credit union. We will be happy to answer your questions.

05/20/08 -- Beware Text Message Phishing Attempt There have been several cell phone text messages reported that state "Your SunState FCU account is closed due to unusual activity".  These messages have been coming to our members as well on various cell phone carriers.

The message then requests that recipients call a phone number or go to a website.  Responding to this will take you to a voice mail system or website that asks you for credit card and other information that can be used to steal your identity.

If you see a message like this on your cell phone do not reply by texting, and do not call the phone number listed.

If you believe you've been scammed, file your complaint at ftc.gov, and then visit the FTC's Identity Theft website at consumer.gov/idtheft.

05/21/08 -- Eppicard Phishing Scam
Several of our member have been receiving emails from "Eppicard" saying that their account may have been compromised, and that the account is being blocked.

The message then requests that recipients call a phone number.  Responding to this will take you to a voice mail system that asks you for credit card and other information that can be used to steal your identity.

Again, this is another scam.  Florida Credit Union suggests that you can either forward these emails to spoof@flcu.org or report to the Anti-Phishing Work Group at reportphishing@antiphishing.org.  From there, someone can work to help bring these organizations down.

Instructions for Submitting Phishing Email:

   1. Create a new mail to reportphishing@antiphishing.org (or spoof@flcu.org)
   2. Drag and drop the phishing email from your inbox onto this new email message
   3. Do not use "forward" if you can help it, as this approach loses information and requires more manual processing. The exception is when you use the Web interface to outlook: in that case forward is the only solution.

If you see a message like this in your email, do not reply, and do not call the phone number listed.
